Smackmography Tour ‘08: Bible Belt Love’n

Oklahoma City:
This was a cool show. The venue, the 51st street Speakeasy, was an old house/mansion? The crowd was really posh, and were doing their own thing until they asked us to wish a girl a happy 21st birthday and we broke out an impromptu rendition of “The Birthday Song,” by the beatles. They danced and we all had a good time. Asleep, Audience…Dream was a cool band and a great bunch of guys. They had that flare of experimental psychedelia. Outside of a “minor” inconvenience after the show, it was a cool place. The weather was really nice.

Arkansas:
This state might be underrated, granted it was like a time warp five to ten years backwards. I am really impressed with its beauty and the people we met. The scenery was pretty amazing. We went to the co-op in Fayetteville. We all hung out at this cool park and played some frisbee and appreciated the cool air. I love awesome weather. Some of the co-op employees came out to our show, which was really awesome. We played at New Deli’s last show, so it was extra special. Transmography had played there before and the place was packed. Everybody played an amazing set and the crowd was dancing and smiling and really into the music and bands. Needless to say, a lot of alcohol was consumed. Big ups to Melanie for putting us up as best she could, but a couple of us ended up sleeping in the van. It was surprisingly pleasant due to the weather. We also found some apple trees that provided us with an awesome breakfast treat.

Kansas:
We had to double back to Oklahoma to get to K-state We stopped at Natural Falls State park and saw some cool stuff. We witnessed an awesome waterfall, some dripping springs and snapping turtles. Unfortunately, there was no Stink Ape sightings. From there, we headed through Tulsa to the northern border and then to Wichita. Kansas is really flat. We played an interesting show. I had a breakthrough in sound. We also attempted some songs that Frazier had never attempted before. We killed it. More important than that, we made some new friends from Nepal. The only thing that is an annoyance is that our brakes are going out, so we have to take care of that before we do anything.

Tulsa:
We made it back to Oklahoma. We stayed in Tulsa, our breaks went out and we had to get them replaced… No Biggy. We played at this cool bar that was a “bicycle bar,” in theme, called Sound Pony. It was cool and a very mellow show. We had a lot of fun in our hotel room with the sweet view of Tulsa. Oklahoma is O.K. as the state motto suggests.

Arkansas Round 2:
Hot Springs is an interesting town. We found a lot of treasure in the flea markets there. I learned that Bill Clinton is the cure for the blues. People there liked our music a lot. They told us.

Little Rock:
We played a house show at this place called Lazer Puzzy. It was insane. The people that packed into that place all went nuts for the bands, on a Wednesday no less? I was down for it. We really enjoyed Arkansas, the hospitality, the weird coincidence that every venue we played had a cake, and the really cool people, especially all the people that made it to more than one show. There is something really cool to be said about these people. They are some kind of cool.

We also got up early and went and climbed Pinnacle Mountain there, Bobby got dropped off at a diner. He said, “F that, you guys go ahead.” We went on and when we got there, our hearts were set on taking the hard trail and so we did some cool rock climbing. We had the wobbly legs but it was worth it to make it to the top after a night of drinking. Its also an interesting feeling to know that if you slip, you will most likely die, but we made it. The view was spectacular and very much worth it.

After that we packed our gear and rode all the way to Beaumont. Jasper, TX has a creepy vibe. It smelled funny.

Connect the Dots:
Beaumont Texas was awesome. We connected the dots by having Austin bands play with Beaumont bands. It was a two day event bringing the two cities’ musical diversity together to one venue turned melting pot called The Vortex in Beaumont. The show was very successful and I was quite proud of the crowd response to all the bands. Our show especially was heartwarming with the crowd. I had a whole bunch of fun. I can’t wait for the next happening.

This has been a great tour, and unfortunately, I can’t post everything. Know we had a good time. I saw some really cool things and enjoyed an adventure or two.

Back to reality,
Trae
